Combining Wi-Fi and Smart Waste Solutions to Improve Cities
- Thursday, March 29
- 12:00-12:55 PM
- Infrastructure & Resilience Conference Track
- Room 2203
Developing a smart city includes taking some of the most overlooked public systems and finding ways to increase their efficiency. Not only do smart cities set out to create new services, but an integral part of a city’s transformation is finding new solutions for legacy systems. Waste management typically constitutes a large portion of a city’s budget and carbon footprint. Trash collection once a week can cost upward of $2000 per trash can.
Bigbelly, a smart waste and recycling company, developed a compaction capability solution that uses solar power to reduce collection frequency, fuel consumption and plastic bag usage. Realizing there was untapped potential, Ruckus partnered with Bigbelly to take their solution one step further by incorporating Ruckus’ Smart Wi-Fi solution to provide reliable public Wi-Fi. Because of the solar power capabilities and densely populated locations, Bigbelly’s waste solutions proved to be the perfect host to mount Ruckus access points.
In this presentation, Bigbelly and Ruckus will discuss how creating new technologies for public waste and recycling collections significantly improves the lives of citizens and decreases a city’s carbon footprint. This dual presentation will discuss the number of unexpected ways waste management solutions benefit the lives of citizens. They will discuss the cost savings for waste collection and public Wi-Fi expansion as well as ways in which this solution improves attractiveness to citizens and visitors.
We hope that you can join us. Add our session to your Smart Cities Connect conference agenda!
