University of North Carolina, Greensboro: This week, fueled by student & staff initiatives, UNC Greensboro deployed their inaugural fleet of Bigbelly Smart Waste stations. Funded by a grant from the ‘UNCG Green Fund’, the University brought the technology to campus for Bigbelly’s three core tenets: Sustainability, Operational Efficiency, and Beautification. UNCG prioritized this initiative to improve support for their Facilities Services labor force, reduce carbon footprint, increase waste diversion rate, and help to keep the campus beautiful, clean, and safe.
UNCG’s Facilities Services team worked in partnership with the UNCG Green Fund, a campus-based grant program developed by the UNCGreen Student Club. The fund is supported by student activity fees, and fuels UNCG’s Climate Action Plan through sustainability initiatives like the Bigbelly project. The Green Fund financed the inaugural fleet through Bigbelly’s Connect™ Service Program, demonstrating the University’s true commitment to efficiency and diversion.
“‘The ability to begin to modernize our waste management system allows us to continue to decrease our carbon footprint, while optimizing our efficiency,” says Ross Rick, assistant director for facility services. “For the students to decide that this investment was important to them is an empowering statement that they are committed to this project in the present and the future.”
