Summer is in full swing, and communities across the country are creating cleaner, more welcoming places where residents and visitors can gather, explore, and enjoy the season.
The City of Hoboken is one of them.
Working together with the Hoboken Business Alliance, Commercial District Services, LLC, and the South Waterfront Corporation, the City has completed one of its most significant public waste infrastructure upgrades in years—installing more than 120 Bigbelly SmartMax® and Smart waste and recycling stations throughout Hoboken’s business district and southern waterfront.

Replacing traditional waste receptacles, the new system is designed to support cleaner, more vibrant public spaces while improving operational efficiency during one of the busiest times of the year.
The deployment includes:
- ♻️ Increased waste and recycling capacity
- ☀️ Solar-powered compaction technology
- 📲 Real-time collection monitoring
- 🍕 Dedicated “Pizza Boxes Only” recycling stations
- 🌿 Fully enclosed stations that help reduce litter and deter pest activity
- 🚶 Cleaner, more welcoming streets, sidewalks, parks, and waterfront gathering spaces

From the bustling Washington Street corridor to Hoboken’s beautiful waterfront, the new system is helping support cleaner public spaces for residents, businesses, and visitors while giving collection teams better visibility into service needs and helping reduce unnecessary collections.
Congratulations to Mayor Emily Jabbour, Commercial District Services, the Hoboken Business Alliance, the South Waterfront Corporation, and everyone who helped bring this vision to life.
Together, they’re demonstrating how smart infrastructure can help create cleaner communities, support local businesses, and enhance the places where people come together all summer long.
