Cast off the MS Stena Danica, a ferry operated by Stena Line between Gothenburg, Sweden and Fredrikshavn, Denmark. This vessel from one of the largest ferry operators in the world, Stena Line, which offers numerous routes across Europe. Passengers and crew on this ferry will now find Bigbelly’s smart waste system on deck while sailing in the North Sea, each solar-powered waste compactors soaking up the plentiful sun. “Stena Line and Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, for a period of time have been testing and evaluating a successful project with the smart waste bin: Bigbelly. The smart Bigbelly solar powered waste bin is placed on one of the Stena Line ferries that streamlines and minimizes debris management on board. Bigbelly facilitates reducing litter aboard the boat and notify staff, via an application, when and where the collection must be made.
This bin says ‘thank you’ and gives more space in the container by compressing the waste! Together with Emil Vestman and Niklas Gren at Chalmers University of Technology, a fun response was established. These Bigbellys are not only unique, but also equipped with sensors which, when the hopper is opened, plays a sound in the form of character on the respective ship.” Source
