Once lined with printing presses and warehouses, Hudson Square is now one of Manhattan’s most creative neighborhoods. When the Hudson Square BID was founded in 2009, its mission was to shape public space — not just maintain it.
As the district invested in new streetscapes, trees, and public art, a new challenge emerged: how to keep streets clean and consistent while reflecting the neighborhood’s identity.
Bigbelly’s smart, fully enclosed waste and recycling systems gave Hudson Square a dual benefit — cleaner corners and a creative canvas.
With branding partner Six + One, the BID wrapped the bins in bright pink and yellow and filled them with playful copy that was reflective of the neighborhood workforce and its culture.

“Our Bigbelly bins have become mini-billboards of neighborhood pride. They’re smart, they’re sustainable, and they make people smile.” Suzy Changar, SVP Marketing & Communications, Hudson Square BID
The results were measurable — and visible. Cleaner streets, zero overflow, and over 80% brand recognition from community surveys.
From utility to urban identity, Hudson Square proved that infrastructure can also inspire.
Cleaner. Smarter. Designed for life in motion.
