Bigbelly extends its smart waste and recycling system to host wireless communications and IoT infrastructure. In partnership with Telit, Bigbelly showcases the Telebelly, a multi-purpose Smart City Platform for deploying Small Cell in the public right-of-way.
Los Angeles, CA: Bigbelly, the world leading Smart City Solutions Provider specializing in smart waste and recycling systems, highlights its multi-purpose platform at Mobile World Congress Los Angeles, and demonstrates how to leverage core waste infrastructure as a host for wireless and telecommunications technologies. Telit will preview Bigbelly’s telecom cabinet and its capability as a multi-purpose Smart City platform at its booth (GSMA Innovation City – South Hall, Stand 1762).
Communities and solution providers share the challenge of how and where to deploy Smart City solutions and communications equipment in the public right-of-way without creating additional clutter or negative aesthetic impact. Cellular coverage and capacity deficits are increasingly common in dense urban locations where people gather – sidewalks, parks, transit stations, venues, and waterfront communities. Installed densely throughout these public spaces, Bigbelly stations collect waste to help keep communities clean. It is now possible to leverage this critical city waste footprint as a telecommunications siting platform to host DAS, Small Cell, Wi-Fi, and other IoT or Smart City infrastructure.

Bigbelly & Telit Case Study – Partners in Communication: Bigbelly waste & recycling stations are capable of sensing and reporting in real time a broad range of fullness and collection activity information. To launch this next-generation intelligent waste & recycling collection system, BigBelly needed to incorporate robust, reliable and cost-effective IoT capability.
But to get that information to customers and integrate these solar compactors into a “smart grid” network, the company needed among other components a high-quality modem to install in the BigBelly and SmartBelly components.
