Arlington County, Virginia, is setting the standard for scalable, community-friendly composting with the Bigbelly Smart Compost System. Designed to be solar-powered, rat-proof, and app-connected, Bigbelly bins make food scrap drop-off clean, secure, and available 24/7—right in the heart of neighborhoods and parks.
As the first community outside New York City to launch the program, Arlington has already expanded from its initial 14 bins to even more sites across the County. Each unit supports up to 100 households, while the County uses real-time data to track diversion, optimize service, and measure success. Together, Bigbelly and Arlington are showing how composting can scale—delivering cleaner public spaces and meaningful environmental impact.
